Dr. Steven Brem is a neurosurgeon who has devoted his professional career to develop therapies for patients with brain tumors. He obtained his medical, surgical, neurosurgical, and oncology training at the Harvard Medical School, the Harvard teaching hospitals, and the National Cancer Institute. He worked in the laboratory of Dr. Judah Folkman, the pioneer of anti-angiogenesis therapy, and has taken drug discoveries from the laboratory to the bedside, using clinical investigations. As a surgeon, he has developed MR-guided surgery, and specializes in complex brain tumors, including those near the motor strip, speech area, and at the skull base. He currently is theProgram Leader of Neuro-Oncology at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, and Professor at the University of South Florida. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of both the American Brain Tumor Association and the Florida Brain Tumor Association. He has authored over 100 publications, and received multiple honors, including the Medal of the Canadian Royal College of Surgery, and named to the “Best Cancer Specialists in America”. He was voted Moffitt’s 2002 Physician of the Year. He is a co-founder of the NCI-sponsored, New Approaches to Brain Tumor Therapy (NABTT), a CNS consortium for the evaluation of new treatments using Phase I/II clinical trials.
